Why Drainage Matters as Much as the Roof Itself

A perfectly installed roof still fails if the water can’t leave the building. Most “roof leaks” we get called to in older KL homes are actually drainage problems — backed-up gutters letting water find a way under the roof edge, blocked valley gutters letting water sit on the tiles and seep through the underlay, or undersized downpipes that overflow in heavy rain and soak the facade below.

Gutter and rainwater downpipe (RWDP) maintenance is the cheapest, most overlooked part of building care. A blocked gutter cleared in twenty minutes prevents the kind of roof and wall damage that costs thousands to fix.

The KL Drainage Pattern

Two main failure modes are common across the Klang Valley:

1. Blockage from organic debris — most KL roofs have at least one nearby tree, and tropical species shed leaves and seeds year-round, not seasonally. Gutters fill silently and only fail under heavy rain, which is when the backup damages the roof.
2. Undersized or perished systems — many older terrace houses and shoplots have galvanised gutters that rusted through years ago, or PVC systems that warped in the sun. They look passable from the ground but leak at every joint.

Newer Puchong and Subang Jaya housing often has workmanship issues — short joint laps, poorly fixed brackets, and downpipes that don’t carry the flow they should. Those are repair calls, not clearing calls, and they recur until the install issues are addressed.
